Root and Press – Our Groups and Scheduled Events

Opening the business took a lot more blogging time than I anticipated, forcing me to all but abandon this blog as a means to communicate. Now that Root and Press has been opened for about three months, some sense of normalcy and routine is returning to our lives. I find blogging about books and coffee exciting but also useful – it is a means to analyze the trends and news in the business, and communicate with followers – both customers and otherwise. On a personal level it is a means to destress and let off some steam – a hobby more than anything else.

We will be updating this blog regularly (ideally bi-weekly) as we move forward – mostly with book news but also with items on Worcester, food, and general business trends and tidbits. Here, I plan to simply alert followers to our events. I will post a blog soon that will be more similar to what I plan a blog to look like going forward. We plan to feature a book of the week, a local author of the week, and new releases we will carry. I plan to review any books I have read and I will update other store news as it becomes available.

Here is a breakdown of our current events:

Book Clubs

We have started a few book clubs during the past few months. We usually select books via poll on Facebook (there is a Group under our page for each you can join) but we could always add a choice or register votes for non-FB attendees

  • Fiction Book Club – The next book in the fiction club is Girls Burn Brighter by Shobha Rao and we will meet on the August 21st. To fully engage with the group, sign-up here.
  • Non-fiction Book Club – The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker. This group is meeting next on August 28th. The Facebook group is here.
  • We have also started a Mythology and Folklore group that will be focused on reading books and other media in the genre but also will probably grow to include some paranormal/New Age/Sci-Fi titles. The first group meeting is September 10th. Our first book is Song of Achilles. Group members get a paperback copy for only $12.00!
  • We are hosting intermittent events for a queer and transgender teen book club. Contact Sarah at this Facebook Page if you would like more information. The next book is Bloom by Kevin Panetta and the meeting is on September 17th 5:00-7:00.

Other Events

  • We will be starting a cribbage night on September 27th at 6:00 – please email us at if you would like more information.
  • We would like to start a pitch league sometime in early September – if you would like to join please email us at the store or text/call 978-870-5429.

The Socratic Cafe

One of the main reasons I wanted to open the bookstore was to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas – via the books on the shelves and providing a physical meeting place for diverse groups to meet and talk. A customer notified me of the idea of a Socratic Cafe – a movement really – that gets together to discuss larger questions of our existence. The main idea behind the group is that you gain more knowledge by questioning, debating, and validating your ideas with others. This group will start meeting after Labor Day (update: Wednesday, September 11th at 6:00.)

Death Cafe

What is a death cafe, you ask? It is a space for people to get together and talk about the loss of loved ones and to explore oneself in the community of others who have felt similar pain. The first and second group were well-attended – if you feel the need to talk to others because of hurt or pain, please message us and we can forward you to Vesper, the coordinator of the cafe.

Author Events

We will be hosting many author events as the summer ends and we turn to fall. We create individual events for these events so keep your eyes peeled!
